Background: In the fall of 1976, 23-year-old Peace Corps Volunteer Deborah Gardner (above) was stabbed to death on the island kingdom of Tonga. Nearly 28 years later, the case resurfaced in Philip Weiss's book "American Taboo" that provides new details about her slaying and its aftermath, including the broken promise that allowed Gardner's alleged killer, another Peace Corps volunteer, to remain free and lead a seemingly normal life.

What: Book Club - Members are encouraged to read the book American Taboo before attending the event


Description of Event: Philip Weiss, author of "American Taboo," will speak to the Maryland Returned Volunteers.


Details of Event: The event will begin with a showing of the CBS News "48 Hours Mystery" documentary that was made of the story of Deborah Gardner's murder. After the documentary, the author Philip Weiss will join a panel including two psychiatrists and a criminal attorney to discuss the psychiatric and criminal implications of the crime. After the panel members each make their statement about the conclusions they have reached, they will be open to general questioning by members of the Maryland Returned Volunteers.


Admission: Free to members of the Maryland Returned Volunteers. Attendance is limited to first 25 to RSVP. You must call (410)-669-2383 and leave a message if you are planning to attend.

June 6: PC suspends Uzbekistan program Peace Corps has announced that it is suspending the Uzbekistan program after the visas of 52 Peace Corps volunteers who arrived in January were not renewed. The suspension comes after a State Department warning that terrorist groups may be planning attacks in Uzbekistan and after the killings in Andizhan earlier in May. Background: PCOL published a report on April 23 that Peace Corps volunteers who arrived in January were having visa difficulties and reported on safety and visa issues in Uzbekistan as they developed.
